South East Queensland Storm Update:

It has been a trying time over the Christmas/New Year period with residents over South East Queensland being hit hard by unprecedented weather events.

I would like to thank our amazing Energex and SES Teams for all their hard work over this period in restoring services to the affected communities. I also want to thank everyone who volunteered or helped out their neighbours during this time.

Those who have been affected by the severe weather events should be aware of the assistance available. To see the grants that are available please click the link below.

For businesses who were hit by the storm, the Queensland Government has also launched a new SEQ Natural Disaster Business Survey to help prepare for future events and determine if additional support might be required.

Free TAFE and Building New TAFE Facilities

Recently I had the privilege of opening the new TAFE Queensland Coomera Marine Centre of Excellence.

This $11.8 million project will give people the skills and opportunities to get a good job in Queensland’s emerging marine industry.

The facility will help to train the next generation of Queenslanders, it hosts a range of facilities including workshops for electrical and mechanical work, fibre glass and lamination and much more.

In 2024, the Australian and Queensland governments will also provide around 14,500 fee-free TAFE places to Queenslanders, with a similar number planned for 2025 and 2026.

Yalkuri Drive Update

Construction has begun on the Beaudesert-Nerang Road & Yalkuri Drive intersection upgrade.

This is an upgrade I advocated for on behalf of the community and it is great to see construction underway. Once complete it will include:

Installation of traffic signals with pedestrian crossings to improve safety.
Widening of the intersection with additional lane capacity.
On road designated and shared bicycle infrastructure.
Resealing of a 500m section of Beaudesert-Nerang Rd near the intersection.

Boosting School Food Programs

Kids learn better when they eat properly.

That’s why we have given funding to:

William Duncan State School
Worongary State School
Nerang State High School
Nerang State Primary School

To help keep tuck-shop lunches cheaper.

This will ensure that kids have access to healthy meals, giving them the energy to concentrate in the classroom and have fun on the playground.

This funding will also ease the cost of living pressures on our tuck-shops.

Out and about in 2024

It was lovely to meet so many people at Emerald Lakes Markets and hearing from people while door knocking in Nerang with information about what the Miles Government is doing to help Queenslanders with the cost of living.

This comes alongside the $8.2 billion in concessions announced in the state budget.
