Minister for Housing
The Honourable Meaghan Scanlon

  • The Palaszczuk Government has finalised the purchase of 52 new social homes
  • Another 13 are expected to be wrapped up soon
  • It builds on a record $3.9 billion for social and affordable housing – the largest concentrated investment in Queensland’s history – to help deliver 13,000 homes.

The purchase of 52 new social houses and units across Queensland is now complete, Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon has announced.

Families and residents are expected to move into their new homes shortly after the completion of minor upgrades with 5 dwellings already being tenanted in the Cairns, Scenic Rim, Moreton Bay and Townsville LGAs.

Contracts for a further 4 homes are expected to be finalised soon, with the remaining 9, which are in construction, expected to be finalised by late November.

The opportunity to purchase the homes was identified, in consultation with Q-Shelter, as being able to bring more housing online faster and at greater value to Queensland taxpayers.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“Across the country, housing pressures are having an impact, including in Queensland.

“That’s why we’re taking action with a record investment in new social and affordable homes, but also looking at different ways to tackle the issue.

“Like many other industries, building new homes takes time so the purchase of these homes will help put a roof over the heads of vulnerable Queenslanders sooner.

“This is a better, faster outcome that will help vulnerable Queenslanders right across the state – not just in one location.”
