Homes for Queenslanders: Shovels hit ground on new Labrador social homes
  • Construction underway on 15 new social homes in Labrador
  • Part of Miles Government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan for 53,500 more social homes by 2046
  • Stark contrast to LNP who sent social housing backwards by 428 homes, blocking Help to Buy legislation

Tradies are building 15 more social homes on the Gold Coast with the Miles Government delivering its Homes for Queenslanders plan.

The Labrador project will feature 15 one-bedroom units suitable for single people and couples including seniors, young people and people with a disability.

It follows the recent completion of dozens of new social homes across the Gold Coast including at Pimpama, Nerang and Varsity Lakes and construction underway on homes in Miami.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon says Queensland’s social housing Big Build is all at risk under the LNP who cut social housing and will cut it again.

Three of the units will be built to Gold standard under Liveable Housing Design guidelines, meaning they will be accessible for seniors and people who may have mobility needs.

The convenient location of the new homes will offer easy access to local shops and services as well as the Gold Coast public transport network.

The homes are being built on the site of a vacant former hotel.

Construction is forecast to be completed in 2025 and is supporting around 32 full time equivalent construction jobs.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“Queensland is one of only two states in the country to have increased public housing in the last decade, but it’s clear we need to do more.

“Our Homes for Queenslanders plan is getting more shovels in the ground and tradies on the tools to build the homes Queenslanders need.

“The LNP have been out there suggesting Homes for Queenslanders is too much, so the question is what will they cut – will it be social homes like these in Labrador?”
