Minister for Housing, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Public Works
The Honourable Meaghan Scanlon

  • Thirty new social homes being built in Miami
  • Consists of 19 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom apartments
  • Part of Miles Government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan for 53,500 more social homes by 2046

Shovels are in the ground on 30 more Homes for Queenslanders as the Miles Government drives its social housing Big Build.

In partnership with Community Housing (Qld) Limited, a run-down unit complex has been demolished to make way for 19 one-bedroom apartments and 11 two-bedroom apartments.

The complex will be lift-serviced, with 10 units to be built to Platinum level accessibility and the remaining 20 units to be built to Gold level accessibility.

It follows the recent completion of dozens of new social homes across the Gold Coast including at Pimpama, Nerang and Varsity Lakes.

As part of its Homes for Queenslanders plan, the Miles Government has outlined an ambitious target of an additional 53,500 social homes in Queensland by 2046.

The social housing target in Homes for Queenslanders was informed by modelling done by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute.

The modelling incorporates historical and predictive analysis, including population growth and social and economic factors, to inform social housing need, and is the first of its kind in Australia.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“Queensland is one of only two states in the country to have increased public housing in the last decade, but it’s clear we need to do more.

“Our Homes for Queenslanders plan is getting more shovels in the ground and tradies on the tools to build the homes Queenslanders need.

“The LNP have been out there suggesting Homes for Queenslanders is too much, so the question is what will they cut – will it be social homes like these 30 on the Gold Coast?

“Queenslanders have already seen us work with industry to find new ways to build homes faster – including social homes – and we’ll be working with them closely to program another 53,500 over coming decades.”
