The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Minister for Housing
The Honourable Meaghan Scanlon

  • The finishing touches are being made on a new social housing complex in Brisbane’s south, the Palaszczuk Government has announced
  • New tenants will move in coming weeks into the 32 one-bedroom units designed for seniors and young people
  • It’s part of a record $3.9 billion social and affordable housing investment

Dozens of Queenslanders will soon call brand new social housing units in Mount Gravatt East home.

Construction will wrap up in coming days on the new complex, which includes 32 one-bedroom units for Queenslanders on the social housing register.

The new social homes have been designed for single people and couples who need housing assistance, including seniors and young people.

The $12.28 million project was constructed in partnership with Brisbane Housing Company, with the Palaszczuk Government contributing $6.38 million.

It’s part of a record $3.9 billion investment in social and affordable housing, the largest concentrated investment in Queensland’s history, for 13,000 homes.

The announcement comes after the Palaszczuk Government earlier this week identified nearly 30 parcels of land to unlock more housing for Queenslanders, and the recent inspection of a new mixed-use precinct with affordable housing at Yeronga.

Quotes attributable to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk:

“Every person deserves a roof over their head, which is why my government is committed to rolling out the largest investment in social and affordable housing in Queensland’s history.

“Each week we are adding properties just like these to the housing supply – a safe place that can change the lives of those who go on to call them home.

“More than 4,400 homes have been built since we came to government and there are hundreds under construction, but we want to do more.

“That’s why we will continue to partner with Queensland’s wonderful housing providers to deliver for our state’s most vulnerable.”

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“This is what our social housing program is about - helping Queenslanders, including seniors and younger people, get a secure roof over their head when they need it most.

“We’ve built on average more than 10 homes a week since coming to government and I’m keen to see more projects like this delivered as soon as possible.

“These apartments are another great example of the work that’s being done, and it won’t be long now before Queenslanders in need will make their home here.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan:

“This new complex will provide help for the most vulnerable in our community, particularly older and young people.

“An important factor in social housing is accessibility to services, and these units are located close to local shops, services and public transport.”

Quotes attributable to Brisbane Housing Company CEO Rebecca Oelkers:

“The Wardle Street development will make an important contribution to increasing the supply of affordable housing in Brisbane’s south.

“These modern, high quality social and affordable homes will provide long-term, stable rental housing for Brisbane’s essential workers who are priced out of the private market, such as those working in the health, education and retail sectors.

“They will also provide a crucial home and peace of mind for people in dire need of housing assistance, including seniors and people living with a disability.

“We are committed to doing everything we can at BHC to grow the supply of safe, affordable homes across the community, and we recognise the significant contribution and support of the Queensland Government in making projects like this possible.

“These homes will provide life-changing opportunities for their new residents to work, connect and thrive within close proximity to local services, transport and all of the local amenity Mount Gravatt has to offer. We look forward to welcoming the first residents to the property next month.”
